I'll Drink to That: Blind Eyes & Guava Basil Martinis

There's a lot going on in the world and it's hard to ignore.

Which is why I'm always baffled by everyone who turns a blind eye. I simply don't see how it's possible to discredit any of the terrible things that are going on. From racial injustice, to LGBTQ+ rights, to discrimination, to climate change. It doesn't make sense.

The United States of America was founded on the principle that "all men are created equal," but of course what the founders really meant was all straight white men. I mean, why else would there have been extensive scientific research to compartmentalize people based on how they look? Why else would they have placed restrictions on what women can and cannot do, but not men? Why else was homosexuality considered illegal?

It has been several hundred years, and some progress has been made, but only in the face of adversity. And here we are, 2020, and there is still a mentality of superiority and privilege that pollutes many Americans, and contributors to American society (looking at you, JK Rowling). Some people simply don't think everyone deserves the same rights, whether they are white, black, brown, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, gay, straight, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, transgender, male, female, non-binary... I simply cannot fathom this. What does it matter if someone that doesn't look like you is given the same opportunities as you? Do you honestly think that their differences as a result of social construct make them less deserving of fair opportunities and human rights?

Someone please explain this to me. I've yet to understand it.

If someone tells you there is a problem in the world, and it is extremely visible, how could you possibly say that it doesn't exist? You may not agree with the methods in which these feelings of injustice are expressed, but how can you simply say that there are no feelings or injustices at all?

There is no such thing as a perfect country. You can have pride in your country and love your country, but you would be remiss to say your country is without fault. This country may have been founded on a loophole, but every human deserves equal rights, and that is always something worth fighting for.

So fight the good fight for equal human rights.

And if you don't think everyone deserves equal rights because of their race, gender identity, religious belief, or sexual orientation, then get the hell off my blog.

I'll drink to that.

GUAVA BASIL MARTINI

YIELD: 1 cocktail

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 large fresh basil leaves, divided

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (half a lemon)

  • 2 oz gin or vodka

  • 3/4 oz guava molasses, or other fruit molasses

DIRECTIONS

  1. Place 3 basil leaves and lemon juice in an empty shaker. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, muddle the leaves until very fragrant and bruised, about 1 minute.

  2. Add ice to the shaker, then pour in gin and guava molasses. Cover shaker, and shake vigorously until shaker is very cold, 30-45 seconds.

  3. Clap the remaining basil leaf in-between in your hands a few times to release the oils, then place in the bottom of a chilled martini glass. Pour cocktail through a strainer into the glass and enjoy.

If you've made it this far, you deserve to see some photos of my baby during an impromptu rooftop photoshoot.
